Austin To House 5,000 Refugees

My hometown is taking on 5,000 refugees from New Orleans, and though this story from the local news claims not to know where, a little bird has told me that cots and beds are being set up at Palmer Auditorium as we speak. So, a challenge to any Austin readers; if you haven’t given yet to a charity, and you’re so inclined, perhaps you could make your way over to Palmer Auditorium and ask if they need volunteers. Meanwhile, in a grim sign of the magnitude of this thing, a death toll of 10,000 or higher is being posited. Sad, sad news, and New Orleans still has people dying…

UPDATE 3:46 p.m. central: Have just been reliably informed that there is a need for clothing items at Palmer Auditorium (gently used is fine)…

  • Hi Mark–First, I was happy to give to the Red Cross at your suggestion.

Second, DJ Drummond at PoliPundit has a long piece on the specifics of this year’s hurricane season and the specifics of Katrina. Also at the link below is a calm assessment of why relief has taken longer to arrive than we all would have hoped it would. So, for those who are generally wondering “how did all this happen?” PoliPundit has some good info.

  • Thanks, Greg, for the link, but more importantly, for the donation…be sure and log your donation here if you haven’t already (you can log it as anonymous if you prefer)…God bless, and have a great Labor Day weekend…

  • Mark, Lubbock is going to have 1,000 people at the Reese Center. I too gave my money to the Red Cross through your blog.

My family wants to volunteer here in Austin.
We are going to head over to Sam’s Club and pick up cases of diapers, formula, etc.
How do we get info on where to go, specifically, where volunteers are needed?
    Thanks!

  • Melissa, here is one resource if you are looking to help…I know the diapers and formula will be greatly, greatly appreciated…

  • Martha (who is my mom, for the benefit of everyone else), thanks for your generosity…have a great Labor Day!…
