9/11 Flashback: The Falling Man

Fascinating piece that I had not seen before, though it is a couple of years old, from Esquire (hat tip: Lorie Byrd) on the Falling Man; more particularly, the man who, captured in his descent head first from the top of the World Trade Center, came to epitomize one of the horrors of 9/11, one that we have largely censored from existence, the jumpers. • too many steves

    There are so many memories:

The falling man, the brilliant sunshine in Positano (Italy. where I was on 9/11), my wife crying watching CNN as she wondered about war and our 17 year old son, Todd Beamer, Lisa Beamer, how would we get home to our children and when, the son-in-law of a close friend who was on one of the planes that was driven into the twin towers, the english man in Ravello (Italy) who picked a fight with this American over how America deserved it, and, finally, making it back to the States, to our home, and to our children.

The Falling Man made his choice, even though it happened to him. He took control and chose his destiny (of the available choices). I respect him, I cry for him, he is beautiful.

  • too many steves, indeed, of the awful choices available, that was the best one…what a horrible, horrible thing…
