E. J. Dionne, Jr.: We’re Doomed, Doomed, I Say!
AcademicElephant alerted me to this article by E. J. Dionne, Jr., a piece of pessimism so transparently partisan I had to look twice to make sure I wasn’t reading Bob Herbert. Sayeth E. J.:
Recent months, and especially the recent two weeks, have brought home to a steadily growing majority of Americans that President Bush’s government doesn’t work. His policies are failing, his approach to leadership is detached and self-indulgent, his way of politics has produced a divided, angry and dysfunctional public square. We dare not go on like this.
…the Bush Era ended definitively on Friday, Sept. 2, the day Bush first toured the Gulf States after Hurricane Katrina. The utter failure of federal relief efforts had, by then, penetrated the country’s consciousness. Leadership, strength and security were Bush’s calling cards. Over the last two weeks, they were lost in the surging waters of New Orleans.
Umm, hmmm…and if wishes were horses, then dreamers would ride…say, how’s that negativity thing working out for you guys with respect to, umm, let’s say…the last two presidential elections? Just wondering…

What can you say? The libs will use anything as a political soapbox to stand on. Even bloated corpses.
Who is surprised by that?
I especially like how he declares “the utter failure of (Hurrican Katrina) relief efforts” on September 2nd. Not that I’m defending the tardiness of deployment mind you, but “utter failure”?
I caught that one too. My point to EJ is simply to remind him Bush has not even finished his first year of his second term – and he better face that fact!
What a loon…
I couldn’t believe it either. The guy has been doodling doomsday since day1 of Bush presidency.
I had to say something, and this is what I wrote him:

It is you Mr. Dionne who is woefully out of touch. You have been writing off President Bush for years now, and all your punditry and predictions amounted to nothing more than pompous drivel.
I have a suggestion. Please go back and read one of your pre-electoin columns, or even one written last summer, when going was rough in Iraq. I cannot help but feel sorry for you and other columnists like you, who can only hope to make a living by writing the most outrageous and hope that some of it comes true. Surely, there must be a more dignified way to fend for yourself.
Hope you get some feedback from whole lot of other readers so you may contemplate the foolishness of your thinking.
Have a nice day Mr. Dionne.
nepaman, I hope you’re not holding your breath for a reply!…
I love nepaman’s letter.
Had a few more things to say about EJ today myself. The editorial is pure fantasy. They can’t win an election, so they just declare the term over with 3+ years to go. I guess it’s the best they can do?
