The Anniversary of the Equation That Shook the World

Brian Greene has an excellent op-ed from yesterday’s NY Times (no subscription wall here) on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the coupling by Einstein of energy with mass. When I consider the accomplishment’s of Einstein’s ‘miracle year’ of 1905, it is quite enough to send me into a deep depression regarding how little I’ve accomplished, while at the same time marvelling at the brilliance of his insights. Was Einstein the Man of the 20th Century? Well, Hitler and Stalin certainly had greater impacts on that century – but of course their impact was negative, and will fade, while Einstein’s achievements will echo through the ages.
