In the World Beyond Harriet…
…we are reminded again of the corruption and decay of Saddam’s despotism in this story about the former French UN Ambassador who is now in custody:
France’s former U.N. ambassador has been taken into custody as part of an investigation into allegations of wrongdoing in the Iraq oil-for-food program, judicial officials said Tuesday.
Jean-Bernard Merimee, 68, who also was ambassador to Italy from 1995-98 and to Australia in the 1980s, is suspected of having received kickbacks in the form of oil allocations from the regime of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. He was also a special adviser to U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan from 1999 to 2002.
Translation: Kofi, you still must go…

When I told my husband about this last night he could not believe that the French themselves actually took Merimee into custody. It must be pretty bad.
BTW, in case you missed it (look, Louie, off topic!), Howard is taking the old “if at first you don’t suceed” approach today:

What the heck, maybe he’ll be right one of these times, but it’s starting to get a little tired. Perhaps someone should remind him that Kristol has been virulently against the handling of the Iraq war for two years? It’s full of good stuff, but make sure not to miss the last paragraph. “Daddy” indeed.
God, Fineman…why did I used to like his work? Can anyone tell me?…
He’s living off of Florida 2000. Same as Matthews. That Chris still has a show, is more proof of that, than his actual intellect. Still Howard and Chris had a falling out…can remember the specifics, but basically Fineman was critical of Matthews style. Occassionally fineman nails it.
I am curious about the UN scandal. Has a dem spoken out on it? if so, What is the harshest thing they had to say?
I mean ‘internationalize’ and ‘multilateral’ and ‘world partners’ were the salt of the dem Foriegn Policy. You’s think they could speculate on the bribes affecting the politcal stands of some countries.
My guess is that before this is all over, we will learn that Chirac was also on Saddam’s payroll.
