    Is there a worse job in America, aside from cleaning stables for horses with digestive troubles, than being the New York Times public editor?

    Never mind the politics of it. You deal routinely with colossal egos, all of whom consider themselves journalists of the first order because they are working for the august Gray Lady, and your job is to point out their failings for all to see. If I had a job like that, I’d never let a colleague serve me a drink in an opened bottle.

  • Yeah, but at least you’d never run out of things to criticize…
