Indictments? Yep, ‘Fraid So

That’s the conclusion of Tom Bevan at the RCP Blog as he reads the tea leaves behind some rather unusual leaks from a tight-lipped White House. The MinuteMan has plenty to keep you occupied as we count down the days (hours?)…

I’d recommend Bob Woodward’s book Shadow as a good history of the mostly baneful effects of the Special Prosecutor. Woodward quotes Lawrence Walsh, who served under Bush 41 (and possibly Reagan) as special counsel on the Iran-Contra investigation. Speaking to a member of Clinton’s transition team, Walsh said, “As a Republican, I would love to see you guys suffer under this law. But, as an American, I urge you to get this law off the books.”

One of several problems with the position is the almost overwhleming pressure for the Special Prosecutor to find evidence for the purported crime that would justify his/her appointment. Given that, the upcoming indictment(s) are depressing but not exactly surprising. In fact, I’m not sure if a Special Prosecutor has ever failed to make an indictment, but if I’m wrong I’m sure one of the commenters will correct me.

  • This whole process should be rechristened LameGate, because there is nothing there.

She was ABSOLUTELY NOT a covert operative at the time this transpired, thus any successive pomp and circumstance is merely well, pomp and circustance.

With all due respect to the Ladies and Gentlemen at RCP, there are no indictments forthcoming.

unbelievable, your advocacy has left you brainwashed. Were either of you alive during Watergate? Vietnam? Wake up for crying out loud. The entire government is playing out a soap opera while everyone else watches like it was the O.J. trial. Fitzgerald is a hero, not for the current administration, but a savior of transparency. Our government is doing dirty things behind the public’s back, and it is bad for the country, not a necessary evil. Iraq made it obvious, Katrina made it obvious, “Lame gate” made it obvious, how many more times does it take for you to snap out of it?
