Rove Dodges the Bullet – For Now

So reports the New York Times:

Lawyers in the C.I.A. leak case said Thursday that they expected I. Lewis Libby Jr., Vice President Dick Cheney’s chief of staff, to be indicted on Friday, charged with making false statements to the grand jury.

Karl Rove, President Bush’s senior adviser and deputy chief of staff, will not be charged on Friday, but will remain under investigation, people briefed officially about the case said. As a result, they said, the special counsel in the case, Patrick J. Fitzgerald, was likely to extend the term of the federal grand jury beyond its scheduled expiration on Friday.

Those fond of parsing might have a little fun speculating on who ‘people briefed officially about the case’ might be. I suspect the lawyers of Libby and Rove are the sources, each for their own reasons – Libby’s lawyer to lesson the blow by leaking it early, and Rove’s to get the word out that, for now, his man is clean…

However, that ‘remaining under investigation’ for Rove is troubling – it seems a Special Prosecutor never finishes a job…that’s something that should concern both Democrats and Republicans…
