    Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin has just increased the French Terror Status
    level from ‘Hide” to “Surrender.” In fact, his newest plan could better be called “enhanced surrender.” It includes (according to LGF)

    “…the creation of an anti-discrimination agency…

    20,000 job contracts with local government bodies or associations… reserved for those in the suburbs struggling to find work;

    An extra 100 million euros (120 million dollars) for associations that work in the neighbourhoods;

    5,000 more teaching assistant posts in the 1,200 schools in districts designated as troublespots…

    The creation of 15 more special economic zones that provide tax breaks…”

    And possibly a midnight basketball league.

    Apparently, the French have never heard that once you pay the Danegold you never get rid of the Dane.

  • A friend of mine over there (works for the government, surprise surprise) mentions that the mobile units of kids with their cell-phones and web-tracking work very similarly to the how the black blocs do here (you know, the anarchist thug-types who did all that vandalism Seattle a few years back). What my friend doesn’t get is why they’re not being allowed to cut off cellphone service except for emergencies in affected banlieue – and even internet service, if necessary.

    As for the “civil war” talk and all the media surrounding this – he thinks it’s overblown, but also a bit of ‘turnabout/fair play’ given how his media were reporting on Katrina.

  • Interesting…yes, I await the Economist cover story on the disintegration of France’s civil order…

  • Well, things seem to be calming down a fair bit. I was in France during the LA riots and remember the media’s coverage of that – “L’Amérique, l’experiment raté,” etc. I don’t think we’re up the creek just yet, but unfortunately, someone seems to think that sort of sensationalist crap sells papers.

    That said, there did seem to be an awful lot institutionalized racism and lack of aid/desire to aid assimilation. I had a difficult time there, even as a college-educated white woman.
    I did try to fit in, though. A lot of immigrants don’t.

    It’s a good sort of cautionary tale for us and our dealings with our illegal (oops! sorry! undocumented) population. If we’re not careful, we’re going to see the same problems. (We do now, but on a smaller level with MS-13 and Triads.)
