Streisand – Celebrate Diversity, But No Conservatives!

For a look at the confused intellectual underpinnings of what passes for progressive thought, Barbra Streisand helpfully supplies a textbook example:

Andres Martinez
Editorial Page Editor
Los Angeles Times

Dear Mr. Martinez,

This letter is to inform you that I am canceling my subscription to the LA Times, and here is the reason why:

The greater Southern California community is one that not only proudly embraces its diversity but demands it. Your publisher’s decision to fire Robert Scheer is a great disservice to the spirit of our community.

…In light of the obvious step away from the principals [sic] of journalistic integrity, which would dictate that journalists be journalists, editors be editors and accountants be accountants, I am now forced to carefully reconsider which sources can be trusted to provide me with accurate, unbiased news and forthright opinions. Your new columnist, Jonah Goldberg, will not be one of those sources.

Robert Scheer’s column, with its often singular voice of dissent and groundbreaking expositional content, has been among the most notable features that have sustained my interest in subscribing to the LA Times for many years now.

A community that not only embraces its diversity but demands it? What the hell does that mean? How does one demand diversity in a community? Import in underrepresented demographic groups?

I find Streisand’s attempts to explain why Scheer is good but Goldberg isn’t to be strikingly hilarious…apparently diversity doesn’t stretch very far, because conservatives need not apply. Unable to face owning up to her own prejudices, Streisand attempts to take the high road, but loses herself quickly. Asking for ‘unbiased news and forthright opinions’ disqualifies Goldberg? I take it his opinions are not ‘forthright’ enough? Whatever can that mean, dear?

Goldberg is tickled pink, as well he should be:

As Streisand surely surmises, we in the warmonger and puppy-kicker community take it as a great badge of honor to be singled out for obloquy by the likes of her. Short of convincing Alec Baldwin to actually make good on his promise to flee the country, vexing the Dashboard Saint of Hollywood Liberalism is about as good as it gets. That my name is such wolf’s bane (or Yentl’s bane) to her that she must cancel her subscription to the Los Angeles Times is just gravy. Feel free to post pictures of me around your homes if you fear she may be coming through your town.

Don’t ever change, Babs…we need you more than ever (comic relief is hard to come by during wartime)…

They hired a columnist who has a discernable political bias? Shocking! Maybe you can win one of those fancy Weblog awards if you investigate who long newspaper columnists have failed to be unbiased!

But seriously, she needs to go back to talking about Saddam Hussein, Dictator of Iran.
