2005 Weblog Awards Spotlight: The Big Enchilada
Today is the last day of the 2005 Weblog Awards; thanks for your patience at my merciless flogging of my own cause, and for your votes. Tomorrow, I’ll get back to my regular rotation of posts up top.
Until then, scroll down for newer posts…
Well, on the last day of voting, what’s left but to look at the top dogs?
Up for Best Blog of 2005 are:
Andrew Sullivan
Boing Boing
Captain’s Quarters
Daily Kos
Eschaton
Hugh Hewitt
Instapundit
LGF
Michelle Malkin
Political Animal by Kevin Drum
Powerline
Talking Points Memo
The Corner
The Huffington Post
Mudville Gazette
I think we can dispense with Huff’n'Puff right off the bat; I’ve never been impressed with Eschaton. Talking Points Memo is a bit tedious for my tastes, but has a good design; the Corner has the opposite problem – very interesting, but no design. Kevin Drum is one of my favorite bloggers on the left; Boing Boing I never go to, and Mudville Gazette I should go to more often.
The probable winner, Daily Kos, is a favorite target of mine, but Kos has achieved an incredible amount and has a very large, very loyal following; still, it’s more of a community than a blog (though, of course, the same could be said of Red State)…
Andrew Sullivan takes a lot of flack, but he’s one of the true blogging pioneers; Captain’s Quarters, LGF, Hugh Hewitt, and Power Line are excellent blogs all, but this year I’m going with a dual winner, and I’ll tell you why.
Michelle Malkin and Instapundit are my favorites in this category for the simple reason that they use their huge audience base to help out blogging in general. I have been the lucky recepient of links from both, and so have thousands of other young upstart bloggers. In addition, both Glenn and Michelle have a good appreciation for the limitations and strengths of the blogging medium.
I have often seen the criticism, particularly of Glenn, that there is no (or not enough) original commentary; such criticism fails to account for the ‘traffic cop’ nature of the two, and the boost they give to lesser known voices in the wilderness. Either of these two blogs would be a more than worthy recipient…
