The impeachment of Clinton worked, in a short term political sense, in that it disabled him from pursuing his agenda (such as it was). Even though lots of people agreed that it was “just about sex”, the details (dresses, cigars) were so unseemly that Clinton became politically radioactive and, thus, impotent.

Were the Democrats to pursue impeachment of Bush they might actually enhance his political strength. I’ve seen no one (zippo) credibly accuse Bush of using this surveillance program to spy on is political or personal enemies, a la Hoover and Nixon. The Democrats would be left with accusing Bush of breaking the law (which is hardly settled) for the purpose of protecting the American people from further terrorist attack. I don’t see how the President loses in that scenario.

I know I’m not really here, but I just have to say that the geniuses who decided that “Attack the President for Fighting Terrorists” was the viable alternative strategy when “Cut and Run in Iraq” didn’t pan out should get lumps of coal in their stockings. Not only is it terrible strategy, but as this proves, it’s demonstrably wrong.
