Democratic Desperation Over The Alito Nomination…

…is clearly evident in this transparently partisan move to delay the confirmation vote for a week before the hearings even begin:

Senate leadership aides said Thursday that Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., told Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., that Democrats will invoke their right to hold the Alito committee vote over for one week. The aides spoke on condition of anonymity because the move had not been announced yet.

This provokes my best Valley Girl response: well, like, okay, then, whatEVER…postponing the inevitable, that’s all it is…

  • I wonder if the Democrats could make a more peevish and petty maneuver than this. The Alito hearings were delayed until after the Christmas break, so there has been plenty of time to gather any and all background material on Alito and his 15 years on the bench. Now they’re going to delay the vote: why? Not for any substantial reason that they can articulate but…because they can. It’s like dealing with kindergarteners.

  • Ooh. Maybe next, they could, like, force the Senate into closed session to debate Alito’s role in falsifying (I mean exaggerating… (I mean not being quite as skeptical as possible about)) Iraqi WMD intelligence. That’ll show those nasty Republicans that they, like, have to take Senate Dems seriously. Ooh, and maybe they could, like, keep “suggesting the absence of a quorum” to delay the vote when it eventually comes around, or storm the Senate podium and hold a sit-in to prevent those nasty Republicans from calling the vote. That’ll prove to the 2006 voters that these guys mean business.

Well, they did raise over $20MM to defeat Roberts, and spent none of it. So why not blow it all on a Hail Mary?
