Okay, Mark… I know you have a soft spot for the loons of the left, taking people like Sean Penn and Harry Belafonte vastly more seriously than they deserve when they pontificate on foreign policy matters… but Vladimir Zhirinovsky?? This is the guy whose party platform calls for using nuclear weapons to retake Alaska, and for reestablishing the monarchy (and he doesn’t mean a limited or constitutional one — he’s talking about a literal return to serfdom). Of course he’s going to say nutty things.
This is like making a big deal out of the anti-semitic ravings of the head of the American National Socialist Movement. It’s a big deal when Ahmadinejad says it not because what he’s said is outrageous (though it is), but because he’s a head of state who may soon have atomic bombs to put on his ballistic missiles that can already reach Israel.
Confession: I didn’t even note the author…I just thought the tone was outrageously over the top…
