Israel’s Road Ahead

As Sharon’s coma continues, Israeli politics have taken a back seat to the Palestinian election of Hamas, but of course, events have not stood still. Today, Olmert gave a glimpse of his vision of the Israeli future:

Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Tuesday that Israel plans to separate from most of the Palestinians in the West Bank and this would require withdrawing from some of the territory.

It was the first time Olmert, who took over from ailing Ariel Sharon a month ago, has spelled out his thinking for future policy if he wins March 28 elections. The Kadima Party he inherited from Sharon, who is comatose after a stroke, is far ahead in the polls.

Olmert did specify certain West Bank settlements that would stay in Israel’s hands – so don’t expect this vision to be embraced by the Palestinians. Then again, with a Hamas-controlled parliament, don’t expect anything short of the population of Israel packing up and moving far away to win the approval of the Palestinians…
