The Saddam Tapes Controversy

The information contained in the transcribed recordings of Saddam Hussein that have been floated this week is becoming overshadowed by the controversial bearer of the information. I briefly noted yesterday that two former CIA directors have bowed out of the ‘Intelligence Summit’ this weekend, where the rumor was that a ’smoking gun’ would be revealed regarding the movement of Saddam’s WMD stockpiles to Syria.

Rick Moran was skeptical pretty much from the start, and what we know of the tapes shows that his caution was well-founded; while there is interesting talk between Saddam and his aides, there is no smoking gun. More to the point, though, is the role played in all this by John Loftus, who has a bit of a reputation as a flake who is guilty of sloppiness at best and deliberate dishonesty at worst.

Debbie Schlussel had some interesting experiences trying to locate proof that the Intelligence Summit operator was in fact entitled to be listed as a tax-deductible 501(c)(3) organization, and had her suspicions raised enough to cancel her scheduled appearance
