George Allen Continues To Underwhelm
He may be the conservatives’ darling, but he’s not winning any votes in my household with stunts like this:
There was Virginia Sen. George Allen, a former governor who called himself a “common-sense Jeffersonian conservative” with no tolerance for government “nannying.” He won whoops by proposing that congressional paychecks be withheld if Congress misses the deadline for passing appropriations bills that fund the government.
And Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback, who spoke of abortion, marriage and the scourges of AIDS and malaria in Africa. He ended by noting his adopted daughter, Jenna Joy, would celebrate her 8th birthday tomorrow because a woman in China resisted pressure to have an abortion.
His touching tribute competed with Allen doing a live shot on Fox News at the back of the room. Allen later said it was “impolite,” but his staff had agreed to the interview and that’s when Fox wanted to do it
So Allen can’t stand up to Fox News, and I should vote for him for President?
Ruining Brownback’s speech was not enough – he then had to go and dump on the President, too:
Allen at one point specifically trashed Bush’s crowning education achievement, the “No Child Left Behind” law. He said Virginia is not going to be “dumbing down” its learning standards to please “federal department of education bureaucrats.”
Yes, George, throw out the red meat – but how does it play in Peoria, as another two-time Republican president once asked?…
I am still a humongous Bush fan, but recent decisions concerning DPW and Border security has tarnished his image of harshness on the War on Terror. As for the No Kid Left Behind, I have read it is working in some states and not in others. I suspect it is due to ideological support from local teachers as to the success or failure of that Bush iniative. A little Conservate tweaking needs to be applied, not whining of ineffectiveness.
George Allen should announce that he is in the race to win. He can show he is a serious contender only if he announces that he is not seeking re-election to the senate to spend full time on a run for the presidency.
Come on George – go for it full out. Don’t play it safe cheating your chances of winning and Virginia’s out of full time representation in the mean time.
Show the nation what a real Virginia politcal leader can do.
