The Axis of Evi…er, Terror
That’s the name quipped by the Israeli Amassador to the U.N. for a group that includes only one of Bush’s Axis of Evil:
Israel said Monday that a new “axis of terror” — Iran, Syria and the Hamas-run Palestinian government — is sowing the seeds of the first world war of the 21st century. The Palestinians accused Israel of an escalating and indiscriminate military campaign that targets civilians and entrenches its occupation.
The Israeli and Palestinian envoys traded charges at an open Security Council meeting held in response to the recent upsurge in Israeli attacks in Gaza. It took place on a day that a Palestinian suicide bomber struck a packed fast-food restaurant in Tel Aviv, killing nine people in the deadliest bombing in more than a year.
Recent statements by the Palestinian government, Iran and Syria, including one by Hamas on Monday defending the suicide bombing, “are clear declarations of war, and I urge each and every one of you to listen carefully and take them at face value,” said Israel’s U.N. Ambassador Dan Gillerman.
A sobering reminder of how long our involvement in the Middle East will last – probably as long as there is a Middle East…

I don’t know if you’ve read the latest Greenwald post (http://glenngreenwald.blogspot.com/2006/04/iran-good-friend-of-our-good-friend.html), but it makes me glad that we don’t have an avowed ideological ally of the country at which we’re rattling our sabre in control of port operations.
Not impressed, frankly – economic ties are one thing, but I don’t hear anyone from UAE threatening to nuke Israel out of existence. Glenn is awfully sanguine about this threat – but I’m sure partisanship doesn’t play a part at all…
A minor point, but Syria was in fact a charter member of the Axis of Just as Evil. The PA wasn’t included in the Axis pandemic of 2002, but should Spain drop out of the Axis of Countries That Sometimes Ask Sheep to Wear Lipstick, Palestine would be a natural to pick up the slack.
Ha! I love it…
