All Politics Is Local
I stay away from Texas and Austin politics for the most part – though many of my regulars are from the Lone Star state and central Texas, this blog has a wider focus than that (way too wide, probably – I rarely stick to the mission implied in the name of this blog). Nevertheless, I make an exception today to urge any of my fellow Austinites who have not voted yet to do so. Vote your conscience, first and foremost, but allow me to attempt to persuade you to vote against Propositions 1 and 2.
I find myself in rare agreement with the Austin Chronicle on this issue. Bill Bunch, a local hero from the late ’80′s for his passionate advocacy of the ‘Save Our Springs’ ordinance, has long worn out his welcome. Like most professional advocates, particularly those who focus on a single issue, he can’t ever stop, or his whole reason for existence will disappear. The idealist becomes the fanatic, and the world takes on shades of paranoid black and white. Such is the mindset that has brought us these two ill-conceived ordinances that will possibly cripple the economy of Austin should they become fully implemented (a dubious propisition, since much of the content of the ordinances is clearly unconstitutional and illegal, but that’s a matter for another day, should they, God forbid, pass). Bunch can’t win at the courthouse, so he’s trying to reach his extreme goals (no development, period – let’s face it and call it what it is) by appealing to the populist language of ‘open government’ and ‘clean water’.
Austinites shouldn’t be fooled – though I fear they may be.
No on Propositions 1 and 2…
