Austin Voters Come Through!
I’m very happy to report the defeat of Propositions 1 and 2, the charter amendments that would have benefited no one but Bill Bunch. A liberal city need not be chained to the altar of ‘progressivism’, and this vote is proof of that. Did Bunch get the message? Not on your life:
Bill Bunch, SOS executive director, said the fight for the aquifer will continue unabated.
“The science hasn’t been changed by the election,” Bunch said, so the group will redouble its efforts to get $90 million dedicated to aquifer protection land in the city’s November bond election and win approval of a Barton Springs protection ordinance being considered.
Please…as if these amendments had anything to do with ’science’.
Nevertheless, a very satisfying end to a campaign that should have never been…

I agree. As much as I love the Barton Creek Greenbelt — I spend quite a bit of time down there — amendment 2 seemed extremely heavy handed, ill-conceived, and hastily written (as did amendment 1). When the Statesman Editorials (from my view they’re moderate to right leaning… really) and Louis Black (Austin Chronicle, very left) agree on something, you’ve got to perk up your ears. Hopefully SOS members, as well as local Sierra Club leaders will realize that in the future they need to get a little from input from those of us who want to protect the aquifer but not at the absolute expense of everything else.
