Congrats To Glenn Greenwald…

…whose book How Would A Patriot Act? is set to debut at #11 on the NY Times bestseller list. You don’t have to agree with his politics to be impressed with that accomplishment. Look for a review of the book soon in this space…

Mark, maybe I’ve missed it, or simply haven’t been a reader long enough, but why all the mentions of Greenwald? Do you know him? I know he’s on the left, but I can’t believe you would just pick a random lefty blog to cite for your source of…well…liberal stuff. What’s the connection, if you don’t mind me asking?

  • No connection…the reason I mention Greenwald so often is that he is one of the few left sites with heavy traffic that will actually engage in a dialogue with the right…

Allow me to add: I’m no lefty and have occasionally guest blogged (as “Hypatia”) at Greenwald’s site. I’ve also read his book, including having commented on it minimally during manuscript phase, and it is the last thing from a leftist screed. It is a masterful, non-partisan book.

Greenwald is not a lefty, based on the totality of his posts from the beginning and some of his dissing of hardcore lefties in his comments recently. But he is very opposed to the Bush/Frist populist GOP, as am I. Such a position does not a lefty make (tho it obviously makes his blog popular with legions of anti-Bush lefties). And Mark is right, he is very willing and eager to engage right-wingers and libertarians.

I mean, if one is going to criticize Bush on the (correct) grounds that Greenwald does in his book, is one likely to draw Corner or Powerline readers in his comments?

“Greenwald is not a lefty, based on the totality of his posts from the beginning…”

I would agree with this characterization, if you had stopped at “from the beginning.” His recent work (often detailed on this site) has become quite dogmatic and screechy, with rarely any semblance of grounded substance for his increasingly unhinged ranting.

He really displays the classic signs of BDS these days, and I would hope that he would return to the earlier form that I found appealing in the first place. Aside from Kaus and one or two others, his was one of the few liberal sites that did not initially descend into partisan rancor.
