Say What You Want About Woody Allen…

…but having just watched Hannah And Her Sisters for the – what? – 5th time, maybe? – I gotta tell you, at his best, the man made some of the most mature, moving, funny, literate, and absorbing films we’re likely to ever see. Seems to have definitely lost his way, but there are a half dozen or so absolute gems. I’d put Hannah in rare company, with Crimes And Misdemeanors slightly higher, and Annie Hall slightly lower…but those three, I think, are the cream of the crop…

  • I think some of the older, more “slapstick” comedy like Bananas or Sleeper still makes me laugh, I think it holds up.

I also am a big fan of Purple Rose of Cairo period and all the movies in The Woody Allen Collection, Set 3
    - Broadway Danny Rose (1984)
    - Hannah and Her Sisters (1986)
    - Purple Rose of Cairo, The (1985)
    - Radio Days (1987)
    - Zelig (1983)

    excluding
    - Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy, A (1982) which kind of blows.

here’s a cool resource with my goofy collection (I don’t bother to defend it, I likes what I likes) notice no star wars/treks and pretty much devoid of sci-fi (which I don’t enjoy, most is terribly written) except the Alien series.

“What’s Up, Tiger Lilly” is still funny after all these years, and “Take the Money and Run” and “Love and Death” also hold up. “Broadway Danny Rose” was terrific, but I agree that “Crimes” was one of the best of his later period.
