Do-Nothing UN Does…Nothing

While Hezbollah and Lebanon openly discuss the fact that Hezbollah will not be disarmed, nor removed from the south, but just ‘won’t show their weapons in public’ (good God, but that’s outrageous), the UN dithers and delays, and every day that passes makes it clear that Israel has been sold down the river:

The IDF will have to resume operations in Lebanon if the expanded United Nations force being assembled does not fulfill its obligation to dismantle Hizbullah, an official in the Prime Minister’s Office warned on Tuesday.

Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Saniora and Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah reportedly reached a deal allowing Hizbullah to keep its weapons but refrain from exhibiting them in public. Israeli officials called the arrangement a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which passed over the weekend and was approved on Sunday by the cabinet.

“The resolution is clear that Hizbullah needs to be removed from the border area, embargoed and dismantled,” the official said. “If the resolution is not implemented, we will have to take action to prevent the rearming of Hizbullah. I don’t think backtracking will serve any useful purpose. There has to be pressure on Hizbullah to disarm or there will have to be another round.”

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni is expected to raise the issue when she meets in New York on Wednesday with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Annan angered Israeli officials when he told Channel 2 on Tuesday that “dismantling Hizbullah is not the direct mandate of the UN,” which could only help Lebanon disarm the organization. Annan upset officials further when he said that deploying international forces in Lebanon would take “weeks or months,” and not days as expected.

Never mind that tough talk from the IDF; it will be virtually impossible to resume operations now as long as Olmert is in power.  He no longer has the support of his own people, much less the international community…

Mark, here’s some news that may cheer you up, from Strategy Page:

There’s a growing consensus that this is really just a pause in a two – stage war: Israel waits until the UN proves it’s completely ineffectual at disarming Hizbullah, then at the first provocation launches a massive ground offensive.

  • Wishful thinking, in my view – how is Israel going to undertake a ground offensive when 15,000 foreign troops under UN command are in the way, sheltering Hezbollah every step of the way?…nevertheless, I’ll read the link…

Based on what we’ve seen from the UN troops in the past, you could make the assumption that they’re not going to do anything to stop the IDF, and will make haste to get out of harm’s way.

  • Well, God knows I hope you’re right…but there are a lot of assumptions that go into the prospect of a renewed ground offensive, and each of them is far from a sure thing:

    (1) Political will from Olmert
    (2) UN withdrawal of forces (assuming they ever deploy)
    (3) US backing of renewed offensive (I’m afraid Condi has gone European on us)

    …etc….
