A New Resolution To Disarm Hezbollah?
So reports the Jerusalem Post:
The United States is planning to introduce a new UN resolution on disarming Hizbullah in southern Lebanon but US Ambassador John Bolton said Monday this should not hold up the quick deployment of UN peacekeepers.
A new Security Council resolution could help break the impasse over getting an expanded UN force on the ground quickly. Countries that are potential troop contributors have expressed concern about the rules of engagement – and exactly what troops would be required to do, especially regarding the disarming of Hizbullah.
“I think the initial force can be deployed now,” Bolton told reporters. “We want the disarming of Hizbullah to be accomplished rapidly so that the democratically elected government of Lebanon can establish full control over its territory.”
It’s a shame that yet ANOTHER resolution has to be debated to enforce two prior resolutions that both explicitly called for the disarming of Hezbollah, but I’ll give Bolton and the U.S. credit for (belatedly) trying to make the best of a bad situation. But my question is this: can such a resolution pass?
I give it less than even odds…

What is a resolution worth, if you lack the will and the power to enforce it.
The UN is now completely bereft in both areas.

A more straightforward account of the UN’s hostility towards Israel would be hard to imagine.
Why’d you put so many old resolutions up here, though? Which UN resolutions is Israel CURRENTLY not in compliance with?
And do two wrongs make a right?…
Finally, did the UN call for the disarmament of Hezbollah or not? I’m not talking about Israel, I’m asking a straightforward question.
One more thing – what was your source? I don’t take it for granted that things say what they are asserted to say without a link…
Mark… can’t use the UN to support your argument when it suites you and then turn around an accuse of biase when it does not. Make up your mind my friend.
You can check them yourself at the UN site… http://www.un.org
I’ll cut it down to the following…
Palestinian Refugees have the right to return to their homes in Israel.
———————————-
General Assembly Resolution 194, Dec. 11, 1948
“Resolves that the refugees wishing to return to their homes and live at peace with their neighbors should be permitted to do so at the earliest practicable date, and that compensation should be paid for the property of those choosing not to return and for loss of or damage to property which, under principles of international law or in equity, should be made good by the Governments or authorities responsible.”
Israel’s occupation of Palestine is Illegal.
Security Council Resolution 242, Nov. 22, 1967
Calls for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from territories occupied in the war that year and “the acknowledgment of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of every state in the area and their right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force.”
Israel’s settlements in Palestine are Illegal.
Security Council Resolution 446, March 22, 1979
“Determines that the policy and practices of Israel in establishing settlements in the Palestinian and other Arab territories occupied since 1967 have no legal validity and constitute a serious obstruction to achieving a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East.”
Palestinian have the right to Self-Determination.
General Assembly Resolution 3236, November 22, 1974
Affirms “the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people in Palestine…to self-determination without external interference” and “to national independence and sovereignty.”
Reaffirmation of a Palestinian State
Security Council Resolution 1397, March 12, 2002
Affirms “a vision of a region where two states, Israel and Palestine, live side by side within secure and recognized borders.”
Same goes for you – if the UN was right when it condemned Israel, it’s right when it asks for Hamas to disarm – and I still don’t see any current resolutions Israel is asserted to be in violation of…
Actually, that’s not even true – the UN, like any organization, can be right and wrong. The question is, is it right for Hezbollah to remain a state within a state? The answer seems pretty clear to me…
One last comment – I’ll grant you, I’m being a little flip intentionally. I realize you can say I’m trying to have my cake and eat it, too, and I also realize the the ‘right of return’ is included in your examples, and of course, Israel famously will not agree to that.
The point is that we are once again in the area of moral equivalence, and my question is a simple one: do you believe Hezbollah has a right to make a mockery of Lebanese sovereignty by maintaining their own army and carrying out their own foreign policy?
Hasan said
Palestinian Refugees have the right to return to their homes in Israel.
And do the roughly equal number of Jews who fled their homes in Arab countries in 1948 with little more than the clothes on their backs also have the right of return? And the right to claim ownership of any property they might have had to leave behind?
Just asking.
Yes, and Hasan should also answer the question regarding whether the relatives of those Jewish victims who lost their lives, businesses and savings are entitled to recompense. This would mean billions of dollars – how about it, Hasan?
Ready to dig deep, my friend?
The Right of Return is a fatuous piece of political theatre, and was never a serious proposal, nor was it intended as such – just another cudgel to bash Israel for failures that the Palestinians can’t own up to on their own. No, it’s always someone else’s fault in the Palestinian’s minds for their failures, never their own. The infantilization of the country is now complete.
Hasan, don’t forget the ‘rest of the story’;
… and live at peace with their neighbors should be permitted to do so at the earliest practicable date,…
I’m having a hard time recalling anyone from the PLO, PLA, Hamas, Fatah or what have you ever proclaiming to be ready to live at peace w/ their neighbor.
On the other hand, I seem to recall something about 1/6 of the Israelies as being ethnically Arabic & all the citizenship rights that go hand in hand with it. What’s up with dat? Or are they just Jooo-loving dogs in your eyes?
Also, whatever happened to the peace loving, moderate Palistinians of old? The ones we used to read about before the UN handed control to Arafat? Seems to me I recall that they got run out of politics, if not killed & dumped into the sea. hmm?
Yeah we can play this game all day long till kingdom comes.
