I played golf yesterday. I play a fair amount. I’m better than average (if I do say so myself). With a 260 yard drive on the 16th hole, I had the drive of the day among the members of my foursome. One of the other members of the foursome, a friend, complimented me on the drive. He added that as good as the drive was it was still 30 – 70 yeards short of the “average” drive of a professional golfer.
Btw, I found out later in the day that Tiger hit a 3-wood 270 yards into the 7th green to set up an eagle putt. I think it was Jack Nicklaus who said “He plays a game with which I am not familiar”. Jack: that applies to all of us, hacker and pro alike.
True, but when you sink a long putt, you have achieved perfection — even Tiger can’t do better than that.
Agreed and especially if you planned it that way. I’ve been very, very happy with very long putts that didn’t go in but ended very close to the hole. Perhaps that’s another difference between Tiger and me.
Actually, it was Bobby Jones speaking of Jack Nicklaus in the(I think)1965 Masters who said, “He plays a game with which I am not familiar.” Nicklaus shot a 64 in the third round, hitting mostly nine irons and wedges into greens that other players took much longer clubs to reach.
As for Tiger, he is eclipsing the game in a manner I thought impossible. Growing up in Columbus, OH, Jack Nicklaus was my golf hero, but Tiger is going to break all of Jack’s records. I still think it is possible to argue that Tiger doesn’t have anyone like Lee Trevino, Tom Watson, or Gary Player who stepped up and beat Jack even when he played well. Jack finished second or third in the majors something like 38 times. Tiger has one or two finishes like that, but, usually, when he is in the hunt, all the other players fold like a house of cards.
On the other hand, Vijay Singh led by three shots entering yesterday’s final round, he shot 68, and still lost by two shots—so, what do I know.
Great to see tiger back and winning agin yesterday. To start with a birdy then Eagle on the first two holes, simply the greatest of all time.
