Pelosi To Conyers: No Impeachment!

In an article that talks about Nancy Pelosi’s efforts to move the congressional Democrats towards the center (and an article that spends almost an entire page talking about committee chairs without mentioning the Hastings-Harman dustup), we find the following buried nugget:

House Democratic leaders have extracted a promise from the incoming chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Representative John Conyers Jr. of Michigan, to rule out impeaching President Bush. Conyers is the lead sponsor of a bill that would investigate whether to recommend “grounds for possible impeachment.”

Oh, no! What will Conyers say now in his next writeup to the fawning minions of the Huffington Post and Daily Kos? What a tragedy…

This shows Pelosi understood that the only way she would be able to keep her pre-election promise not to launch an impeachment drive would be to convince Rangle to not open the Pandora’s Box in the first place. Smart call. And, while there will be a lot of screaming for a few days on DK, #1) there would have been a lot more if Pelosi had tried to shute down an impeachment drive after Rangel commenced hearings; and #2) screw Kos, anyway.

On the other hand, I suspect that Rangel, as a seasoned House veteran and a high ranking member of the Congressional Black Caucus, extracted at least one major concession out of Pelosi in exchange for his promise. Any guess as to what that concession might turn out to be? Hint: it also involves impeachment of a high ranking government official.

Whoops, I confused Conyers with Rangle in my last post. My bad.

  • Just don’t let it happen again…actually, most of what you said is probably still relevant. Although Conyers seems to have a bit more gravitas than Rangel, he takes a back seat to no one in his opposition to this administration, from what I’ve seen…

Although I will give Rangel some credit for standing up for Bush when Chavez tried to bully him at the UN…
