Upon Further Reflection
Last night, I said the huge Florida victory made the BCS look pretty good, and it did, in the sense that the system put the Gators in the title game. However, Boise State has to be feeling pretty hosed today, as, unlike Florida, they went through the season undefeated, including their thrilling BCS Bowl victory over Oklahoma, so playoff proponents can point to that.
Still, I gotta admit, if I was a voter in the AP or Coaches’ Poll, here’s how my final three would look:
1. Florida
2. USC
3. Boise State
We will return to our regularly scheduled program right after these messages…

Good points all, but I have to wonder about the accuracy of the BCS system when it results in OSU being ranked number one in the nation only to see them suffer a total drubbing at the hands of the reluctantly named number two. And let’s not forget that OSU was touted in part because they beat up on two former BCS number two ranked teams: Texas and Michigan. What does that say about the ranking system? I think it is highly flawed, unreliable, and a poor way to determine which is the best team in the nation.
Yeah, if I’m Boise State today I’m pissed.
Well, in fairness to the BCS, Ohio State was ranked number one by both polls wire to wire, and they were undefeated, so how could they not be number one in the BCS?
Not that I wouldn’t like to see a playoff…
Yes, I know they were, but don’t you wonder about the quality/accuracy of the BCS and the polls after watching that game last night? I do.
On the other hand, there is a lot to be said about the impact of 51 days off since their last game. I don’t care how much you practice, it isn’t the same as playing a game against a motivated opponent. And I heard a story today that Ohio’s QB only practiced a few times with the team since the Heisman selection because of commitments to various and sundry events.
I’m not losing sleep over this stuff, I just think it’s a shame that the national title game was such a boring mismatch and blowout. I mean, really, this game was never close. After the first 16 seconds did you ever get the feeling that OSU would come back? I didn’t.
Oh, I don’t disagree that the game was a first-class dud – but I have to again play Devil’s Advocate by pointing out that last year the BCS gave use the Texas-USC thriller…
Ah, true, true.
