If Hunter S. Thompson Wrote About The Super Bowl…

…it might read something like this piece by Robert Lipsyte in, of all places, The Nation

Go Bears! (hey, I gotta root for somebody, and they look like the underdogs, so why not?)…

One reason not to root for the Bears is because of how Kos (and some others there) are giving political reasons to root against the Colts, even going as far as to smear Tony Dungy of all people!

And, as a Jets fan, I have to root for the Colts after the way they took care of the Pats in the AFC Championship.

  • You’ve got to be kidding me – they’re making the Super Bowl ideological?

  • Do you have a link, Cless? I was reading some on there today; the only offensive thing I saw was when one of them referred to Rex Grossman (or so I presume, at least) as a “Jewboy.”

Here’s one thread about it (though this only had 2 political points, one of which I’m sure was tongue-in-cheek), which includes the following horrible comment about Dungy by someone else (from a Colts fan of all things):

    I thought it was sad and strange… (0 / 0)
    …when Dungy’s son committed suicide.

I thought it was likely the biggest “F**k You, Dad!” that a son in his position could possibly make.

I waited for some sort of press release or plausible explanation, considering Dungy’s reputation for being a good and gentle coach, I couldn’t imagine him not having a good relationship with his son. And I didn’t see anything about a drug addiction or clinical depression surfacing, so I remained confused.

With the recent press, suggesting Dungy’s son as having been gay; combined with Dungy’s uber-religious and anti-gay stances. I think now I understand.

And that’s pretty hard having been a Colts fan for years now.

With Mannings rethug leanings and the odious racism exhibited by bears fans…we’ll I guess it’s still a day of booze and bbq, but the thrill is gone..and I’m rooting for no one.

Here are two other threads which also complained about the Colts for political reasons. Mind you, there were also a number of people who were annoyed at bringing poliltics into a discussion about the Super Bowl, as well as a thread defending Tony Dungy.
