Dueling Journalists

The United States held direct talks with Iran today at the Baghdad security conference:

U.S. and Iranian envoys spoke directly about Iraq’s perilous security situation on Saturday in rare one-on-one talks that could help ease their nearly 28-year diplomatic freeze.

In other news, the United States DID NOT hold direct talks with Iran today at the Baghdad security conference:

Iran and the United States both sent large delegations of 10 representatives each. There were handshakes between the two sides and the delegations traded language back and forth on an anodyne joint statement issued at the conference’s end, according to a person in the room, who was not authorized to speak on the record.

They did not, as the Iraqis had hoped, split off for any one-on-one talks during the conference.

Further proof, as if it were needed, that you can’t believe everything you read…
