No, Not Another Stalin Post…

…but the subject is evil enough for me.  Michael Vick has thrown away his multi-million dollar football career and a life of unbelievable luxury because he apparently likes to kill dogs:

More than football, Michael Vick’s freedom is the question now.

With three associates prepared to testify that he brutally executed dogs and bankrolled gambling, the NFL star agreed Monday to “accept full responsibility” for his role in a dogfighting ring and plead guilty to federal conspiracy charges.

Worries about playing time will have to wait while Vick faces prison time — from one to five years.

Having just tonight taken my dog to the vet (routine annual checkup and shots) and seeing the worried looks on the faces of animal lovers who were in for emergency conditions, I can only say on behalf of dog owners everywhere – PLEASE do drop the soap, Michael…hope your stay is a long one.

Sorry, I know, nothing political there and it approaches a rant – but cruelty to animals is always a sign of a vicious (usually criminally violent) mentality.  No sympathy whatsoever here…

I heard someone speculate that his plea was an attempt to save his career. The thinking is that even with a 3 year sentence, he’ll be out in one year with good behavior. And as long as there is not a lurid trial with days of testimony about each and every episode, the public will have moved on by the time he gets out. At that point some semi-talented team with an outside chance at the playoffs will break down and give him a try. Americans are a forgiving people with a short memory and stranger things have happened.

In fact, it has already started:

“…former Green Bay general manager Ron Wolf (said)…”

“If he pays his debt to society, why shouldn’t he get another chance?” asked Wolf, who was the engineer of Green Bay’s Super Bowl championship team in the 1996 season. “Maybe I don’t understand something in all of this, but you’re supposed to get a second chance in this country.”

  • For the record, his brother is a criminal too. Of all the coverage on ESPN I can’t believe this hasn’t been mentioned.

  • In Wisconsin Packers football is the biggest thing we have. Every news station has a Packers segment almost year round. If he ever becomes an option it will be headlines without question. Im not saying its not possible that he gets on board, but thier would be intense scrutiny. It would be bigger news than the currently proposed budget stoppping doubling of taxes or the soon to land snowfall that traps us all in our houses.

“Maybe I don’t understand something in all of this, but you’re supposed to get a second chance in this country.”
Do you ever scout for cold blooded murderers, rapists and other sorts of psychopaths? Probably not because thier is a big difference between second chances and dismissing a sense of morality.

Much of this is cultural. My mother-in-law, a dog lover on par with you, visited Vietnam a few years ago. While there she observed trucks full of dogs – similar to the ones you see here that are full of chickens – headed to the slaughter house. She was horrified. But, dogs (and somewhat less so, cats) are revered in this country – they are simply food in other places, just as cows, sheep, pigs, etc. are here.

Doesn’t make what Vick did right – not to me anyway – but killed for food or killed by fighting, the dog is still dead.

Does anyone here enjoy watching or participating in the Running of the Bulls?

  • Scott, not me…I understand it’s a proud tradition, etc., but I’m just not a fan of deliberate cruelty to animals, across the board. Am I a vegetarian? No. But eating meat is a long way from sponsoring dog fights to the death…

vick needs to be thrown in jail somewhere in one of the red states, dressed in drag, and put at the mercy of the redneck inmates.
