Pelosi is holding up a trade deal the Republicans like because she thinks she can get other things she wants by doing so. That's not really bad economics so much as it's just plain old politics. If she can get an economic stimulus-type package that actually makes sense - like increased food stamps - then she'll end up with two good policies instead of one. What's wrong with that? (Obviously she won't get such a package because rich people don't use food stamps and so Republicans won't support *that* kind of welfare. So we will end up with less free trade and more anger at Republicans. I don't like the former but I am more than happy to take a few hits in the name of destroying the current GOP.)
