Ryan, love that logic:
If newTrade = increased food stamps Then
__increase US/Columbia jobs
__increase US/Columbia tax revenue
__reduce cocaine production
Else oldTrade
__increase US/Columbia tax burden
__increase food stamps
__reduce US/Columbia jobs
End If

Either way, NannyP gets her food stamps with which to hook more dependents.

As for dems on NAFTA, pay no mind to the Bubba behind the curtain telling the Columbians to hire Donk consultants, ie Penn, in anticipation of a Dem presidency. Pay no mind to the Obambi adviser telling the Canadians to pay no mind to the anti-NAFTA rhetoric.

Bottomline, all 3 contenders are Constitutionally AND economically illiterate.

Well, obviously, I am also not going to rush to defend the Democrats for stalling on free trade, but I don't think there's anything "economically illiterate" about Pelosi's actions in what you've posted. Pelosi is holding up a trade deal the Republicans like because she thinks she can get other things she wants by doing so. That's not really bad economics so much as it's just plain old politics. If she can get an economic stimulus-type package that actually makes sense - like increased food stamps - then she'll end up with two good policies instead of one. What's wrong with that?

(Obviously she won't get such a package because rich people don't use food stamps and so Republicans won't support *that* kind of welfare. So we will end up with less free trade and more anger at Republicans. I don't like the former but I am more than happy to take a few hits in the name of destroying the current GOP.)

As for the idea that candidates should educate their supporters rather than pandering to their fears, it's certainly a good point. But it seems a little... naive, I guess. We live in a post-9/11 world, as we're constantly reminded by our GOP overlords, and fear is just the name of the game. Terrorists are coming to get you (yes, you specifically) at 3am, after all. Why not be afraid?

Most of the agreement’s supporters keep repeating that it’s going to "level the playing field." What they mean is that it's going to help US companies export stuff to Columbia, what the public assumes it means is that it will help Columbians export even more to the US. Democrats like Hillary and Obama can either educate their supporters on the actual situation or pander to their fears.
