Breathing Some Rare Air
No, I’m not referring to the Olympic athletes, forced to endure high-pollution Beijing in 95-degree weather, but instead, I’m moving to the lighter side – or is that the darker side? The Dark Knight is now the #3 movie of all-time, as measured by domestic box office, and has a decent chance of overtaking #2 Star Wars (the original, or, to use the geek nomenclature, Episode 4: A New Hope). The new Batman flick held on to #1 for a 4th straight weekend, in itself a rarity in these days when movies open big then quickly fade.
Some fanboys have gotten a little out of hand, though, with suggestions that the film may dethrone Titanic. I seriously doubt any movie will ever best the remarkable $600 million domestic gross of that movie (or its mind-boggling $1.8 billion worldwide box-office) – at least until movie tickets go up to $11 or $12 on average, which they may at some point. On the small chance that anyone other than me finds this interesting, I’ll also point out that The Dark Knight, when domestic box office is adjusted for inflation, has just barely cracked the top 50 as of now.
The #1 inflation-adjusted movie of all time? Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn…
