Can You Go Any Lower When Your Address Is The Gutter?

Daily Kos continues to make history, with yet another dairy claiming that Sarah Palin is not the mother of her fifth child, born with Down syndrome, but rather that the mother is Palin’s daughter.  The evidence? A bunch of photographs and wild speculation.

I don’t know what to say, other than certain people better hope there’s no such thing as reaping what you sow.  Did I mention Palin’s daughter is sixteen  was sixteen at the time?

And let’s remember Kos banned any mention of the John Edwards story that hinted that it might be true, to the point of tossing diarists who did so:

The whole story is based on an insulting view of fundamentalist Christians; that they’d be so freaked out by a teenage pregnancy that they’d have the Governor — the most highly visible and public women[sic] in the small fishbowl of Alaska — fake a pregnancy to cover up the sins her of daughter Bristol.

That diary got ‘rec’d’ — voted as one of the ‘Best Of’ on DailyKos. The diary is uncited, breathless, and spins a story that’s totally far-fetched. Without going through the whole hot mess point by point, I’ll mention that no doctors, nurses, hospital workers or other patients have come forward to say anything was amiss. Plus, there’s this picture.

The irony for me, of course, is that despite making over fifty short political videos with a clear progressive point of view, I was banned on DailyKos for saying that it seemed reasonable that John Edwards was seen at the Beverly Hilton late at night.

To be sure, some on DailyKos pointed up the numerous problems with the Palin story. But ‘the community’ in large part embraced it and it’s part of a trend…

The election hasn’t even been won yet and there’s already a liberal hubris developing. Progressive standard bearers such as DailyKos and Keith Olbermann have been showing signs lately of a nasty tendency towards stifling dissenting opinions and promoting the sort of crazy rumors usually associated with the right then the reality based community[sic].

It’s not effective, it’s not progressive, and it’s not a good or accurate reflection on Barack Obama or the Democratic party.

Yet this slander on Palin stands, on the basis of no evidence whatsoever.

It’s not just Kos, though; here’s novelist Jane Smiley, one of the most hateful women I have ever had the displeasure of reading, in what can only be called perhaps THE textbook case of projection:

Palin is another Margaret Thatcher or Ann Coulter, a woman who attaches herself to men in power and then does them one better. She uses the freedom that the women’s movement has brought her quash[sic] the liberation of women with other views than hers. The bitch is in there, as it is with Coulter and Thatcher and Katherine Harris. The Democrats have to bring that bitch out and she has given us the right to do it.

Yes, Jane, the bitch is somewhere around here…have you tried the mirror?  Palin’s crime, apparently is to be a conservative who is picked for Vice President of the wrong party:

[A] bitchy and and arrogant point of view [is] a characteristic of all conservative women politicians.

Ah, those forward-think ‘progressives’!  No thought police here!..

There are many, many legitimate lines of attack that can be taken against the Palin candidacy…lack of experience, the Trooper story, etc.  But there are no boundaries to what is considered appropriate in the world of the Nutroots®.  You see, when you are a conservative, you are apparently less than human…

UPDATE 09/01/08: Another diarist at Kos links a photo unmistakably showing Palin visibly pregnant five days before the birth of her son with Down syndrome, and the majority reaction is to go deeper in denial (a pregnancy suit!  My God, how stupid are the Nutroots®?  Don’t answer that).

For anyone who believed this story for even one minute (and that means, you too, Andrew Sullivan), shame on you.

I can’t imagine anything more vile and reprehensible than to attack a woman who chose to let her son live, in full knowledge that he had Down syndrome, with the allegation that she faked a pregnancy to hide the fact that her 16-year-old daughter was pregnant.

I’ve had it up to here with Andrew Sullivan, the king of the smear, followed by the incredulous look of innocence – what, me?…it’s a routine that never was convincing, and gets less so all the time…

Isn’t it amazing the sexism and racism that the “tolerant’ left unleashes on any woman or minority that doesn’t tow the hard liberal left line-Clarence Thomas, Condoleeza Rice, Harris and now Palin.

Can’t have any uppity free thinkers on the lberal plantation.

Do they think such attacks help the Obama cause? They can’t be taht stupid, it has to be plain meanness.

    On a lighter note:

STEPHANOPOULOS: You heard Senator Graham, though. He said that she has more experience than Senator Obama.

KERRY: That’s just ridiculous on its face. I mean, John — you know, Barack Obama has been in the United States Senate. He has not been absent more than he’s been there. She’s been a governor for, what, the two years now, Barack Obama and the four years?

But, moreover, Barack Obama has traveled abroad

    Bears repeating:

“But, moreover, Barack Obama has traveled abroad.”

    God, I miss John Kerry.

What was Peter saying about getting a nomination being a qualification for the presidency?

Why did you “sic” quash? Don’t you know what it means? It’s used correctly here.

  • Yes, I know what it means, and I also know what proper grammar is – and the sentence should have said “to quash”. By leaving out the “to”, the sentence became a run-on…thus the [sic]…

I like how the poll with the second diary has an “either-or” question with “yes” and “no” as options . . .

  • The hysteric nature of these attacks shows that the left is in full-fledged panic mode where it concerns Palin. They’re desperate and reaching for whatever they can, like a dying man going down for the third time.

I feel awful for Sarah’s family having to go through this, but to me, more than anything else, this shows that Palin is the right pick. It’s hard to imagine the left getting themselves in such a tizzy about Romney.

  • Oh no! I take back everything good I’ve ever said about Palin.

This is incredible…20+ years ago….you’re not going to believe this….she wore a t-shirt with a boob joke on it!

    The horror!

Somebody tell McCain to get her off the ticket!

Which is more newsworthy: a blogger at DaiyKos posting crap about Palin’s pregnancy or Cindy McCain’s statements on National television that Palin has international experience/knowledge because Alaska is next to Russia?

  • Gulf Coast Bandit

Baseless smears are in all cases more newsworthy than baseless sunshine pumping.

  • dch

Actually Scott what is more newsworthy is Joe Biden informing the editorial board of a center-left Israeli newspaper that under an Obama administration Israel will just have to live with a nuclear Iran.

Man this really is “change”-the Democrats usually at least pretend to be tough during the campaign before they engage in their usual foreign policy of peace through weakness and submission.

BTW-did you catch, John Kerry, (aka the last empty suit you guys nominated for President, who now looks like Winston Churchill when compared to Obama) over the weekend. He explained that Obama is qualified for President because he has been in the Senate for more time than he has been away and he has done a lot of travelling….LOL

I just keep wondering why you people want to keep engaging in an argument that ultimately shows that your candidate for the top spot has no executive experience of any type and no legislative accomplishments as a US Senator.

dch: yes, we noticed. See #2 above.

  • dch

Hey Bob didn’t see #2-I am glad that I correctly paraphrased what I saw.

As someone who basically likes Palin, I don’t mind calling it ugly. I think it’s probably a stretch to take a Kos diarist as some kind of spokesperson for the left, but there certainly seems to be a lot of bile directed at Palin by folks I’m usually okay with. Not cool.

  • I agree, it’s wrong to equate a Kos diarist with the left, but you know I draw a distinction between the traditional left and what I lovingly call the Nutroots®…Obama, to his credit, disavowed the rumor-mongering…
