Smoker-In-Chief
It’s official: Obama still smokes.
“There are times where I’ve fallen off the wagon,” the president-elect said when asked in a broadcast interview whether he has kicked the habit.
“I’ve done a terrific job, under the circumstances, of making myself much healthier,” he said. “And I think that you will not see any violations of these rules in the White House,” he said on Sunday’s “Meet the Press” on NBC.
I’ve got no problem with Obama smoking; it’s a free country, and I hate anti-smoking fanatics – they’re quite full of themselves. But with all due respect, Mr. President-Elect, coming from a person who smoked between 1-2 packs a day for 18 years before quitting cold turkey some four or five years ago: if you’re still smoking at all, you haven’t kicked the habit. Denial ain’t just a river in Egypt. Though I should note Obama didn’t really deny it, he’s just kind of making excuses. Either do it or don’t do it, but if you do it, don’t try to rationalize it. Just admit that you like to smoke and leave it at that…

So, he’ll smoke at Camp David or in the Rose Garden.
What are his current guidelines for pot and “blow”? He used to like those too.
Hey, give him credit for admitting…at least we didn’t get that “I didn’t inhale” nonsense…
I don’t care if he smokes, he’s an adult and gets to make that choice, however unhealthy it may be. Here is how I quit:

if, you know, Obama is looking for suggestions.
Well, Bob, why don’t you just ask him? He has so far not lied about his use of any substance in the past, nor has he lied about his inability to kick his smoking habit. Exactly what makes you think he’s trying to hide something from you?
He admitted pot and cocaine use but said he had stopped.
How do you know he ever stopped? You have to take his word for it. Ever hear about the tactic of admitting part of a story to hide the rest?
He is awfully skinny for someone just off a campaign with its bad eating habits. Cocaine is an excellent weight loss tool.
Good point! I say the surgeon general should make the man pee in a cup. We just can’t be sure.
So skinny people are drug users? Who knew! We can drop all those laborious and time consuming drug tests and use the test of simple observation. Fantastic.
Heh, I’m just asking questions. Trying to speak truth to power.
Just some dissent.
He is totally unable to kick one addictive substance but he stopped using cocaine, also addictive, just like that.
How do we know?
Well, I guess you can tell I don’t do drugs.
At 5’10″, 155lbs, I am, apparently, a serious, serious drug user! Now, if someone could just tell me which ones I’m using I would be able to focus on quitting.
Seriously though, if you haven’t ever been a cigarette smoker you wouldn’t have first hand knowledge of how horribly difficult it is to quit.
Well, unless you’re one of those (blessed) few who have been cigarette smokers and simply quit because they didn’t want to do it any more. That’s me. I thank my lucky stars that nicotine addiction never managed to get ahold of me.
Ah, so fortunate and so true. That is rare in my experience though. I have a friend who smokes maybe a pack a year – picks ‘em up and puts ‘em down whenever he likes, and has never had an issue either way. Obama seems like one of the majority in that he struggles mightily to stop.
