The Angus Young Show
I’ve been blogging about U2 almost incessantly this year, but last night, I went to a very different kind of rock and roll show. No social conscience stuff here – just flat-out rock and roll. It was AC/DC at a sold-out Frank Erwin Center, but more accurately, it was the Angus Young show.
Simply put, at 54, Angus is a phenomenon. Oh, sure, he looks slightly ridiculous now in those schoolboy shorts, going shirtless, but hey, if I looked like that at 54, I’d go shirtless, too. And sure, he has the somewhat embarrassing combination of long hair and male pattern baldness, but again, we’re dancing around the point.
The point is this: Angus rocks out like no one’s business. I’ve never seen AC/DC live before, though like 99.99% of all American adolescent boys, I once rocked out mightily to many of their tunes. I have no comparison point, then – I’ve never even watched a full-length concert video of the Aussies. But if last night’s show was typical, there is simply no denying that it is Angus that drives this particular rock-n-roll train.
You’ll note I’m using the word “rock” a lot – TRY talking about AC/DC without using it over and over. Because that’s what this band is all about. They don’t lift the soul like U2 – nor do they soothe it like Sinatra. They’re not great artists – I suspect they would scoff at that notion. But they are exactly what they aspire to be – the epitome of a certain style of music. Nobody could ever out-AC/DC AC/DC, if you know what I mean…and the man who holds it all together is that whirlwind in his mid-fifties.
Here’s to you, Angus…we had fun last night, didn’t we?…
Here’s a clip of the show (gotta love YouTube – less than 12 hours later, and you’ve got footage!)…
